2026-2027 5th and 6th Grade Class Descriptions

Teacher: Branden McGrath and Kaden McGrath

8:00 AM – 9:00 AM Archery

Grades 5-6
Tuition: 30 weeks (1-hour class) – $230
Materials Fee: $25
Optional Lab:
Class Description:
“In Archery class, we will start from the beginning using the USA Archery National Training System. The goal of this class is not just to get kids to shoot a bow but to understand that Archery is about technique, form, and having fun. We will apply the steps of the NTS and learn about the equipment we shoot, the different styles of Archery, the scoring and targets of each, and mostly how to have fun in a sport we grow to love. Discipline, structure, and focus on Archery typically make a child a great life steward. Each student must have their own bow and 6 arrows or rent one from CCA. It is imperative to talk with me or Kaden before purchasing any equipment. All bows must be taken home at the end of each school day.”
Required Textbooks and Materials:
Each student needs their own bow and arrows. Please reach out to me before purchasing any equipment. Bows are like shoes, most aren’t a universal fit. Please refer to the teacher directory for my phone number.
Homework Estimate: Each student should practice at least 2 days outside of class to apply skills they are learning in class.
Teacher Bio:
“My son, Kaden, and I are the archery teachers at CCA. I have always been an avid hunter, but didn’t learn the techniques of shooting a bow for score until Kaden was about 6 years old. He attended a homeschool archery class at that time and has now gone on to obtain numerous National Championship titles. He is now competing at Semi-Pro level across the nation. Archery wasn’t as popular then as it is now, so I was forced to learn about the sport in order to coach Kaden at home. I have since obtained my coaches’ certification, started a youth archery team (TN Triple Threat), and opened a small bow shop in my garage. Outside of archery I have my own construction business.”

Teacher: Gwen Schaetz

8:00 AM – 9:00 AM Etiquette & Public Speaking

Grades 5-8
Tuition: 30 weeks (1-hour class) – $230
Materials Fee: $15
Optional Lab:
Class Description:
This class will first cover “Manners that actually Matter” and what I like to call “Courageous Conversation” at the end. We will cover most of the areas that we all feel uncomfortable at times in – areas where if we knew exactly What to do or say or How to do it and When to do it, we would soar with CONFIDENCE! We will address every day, manners at home, out and about manners, like formal dining, party etiquette, ordering and proper behavior at restaurants, going through buffet lines properly, using proper greetings and introductions, social media do’s, and don’ts, how to sit and stand correctly in group photos, and, of course how to write a proper thank you note and why?? We will also cover things like how to be a great host or be a great guest that always gets a second invite, but also representing ourselves well so that people see who we are quickly! Part of growing up is learning what to do in lots of situations! Hopefully at the end of this 30 week class, you will feel confident in your ability to handle anything life throws you! Manners may have gotten a reputation for being pointless or hard or just just for Royals! Truth is … manners are just the right ways of being thoughtful and kind to others. The last 7 to 8 weeks of class, we will focus on the most feared thing on the planet… Public Speaking ! I am saving this for last because I feel that after we have covered some basic manners this will be far less intimidating 🙂 We will focus on the DELIVERY of the speech, thought, or idea. Practicing the do’s and don’ts with fun activities will eliminate this fear! I honestly feel like homeschoolers have such an edge already, but with this “Finishing Touch” there will be no limitations on what the Lord can accomplish in their lives!
Required Textbooks and Materials:
None
Homework Estimate: No more than 20 minutes a week- but mostly no homework at all
Teacher Bio:
I am a lover and follower of Jesus Christ first and a wife and mom to 5.The older three are all married and starting their own families! Five grandbabies so far! Years ago, my husband and I adopted two children from Ethiopia! The kids are 16 and 17 years old now and adding them to our family was the best thing we could have ever done! Now I have been homeschooling for 25+ years! We live on a little hobby farm and enjoy goats, camping, swimming and Boating. I have a bachelors degree from the University of Tennessee. My first job was teaching kindergarten at a Jewish school in Wisconsin and that’s when I knew how much I enjoyed teaching children. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of teaching many different subjects that I’m passionate about to many different ages. Honestly, it is my true JOY To pass on knowledge and the love of Jesus to my students!

8:00 AM – 9:00 AM Programming with Robotics

Grades 5-8
Tuition: 30 weeks (1-hour class) – $230
Materials Fee: $25
Optional Lab:
Class Description:
“This course is an introduction to programming using VEX IQ robots. Students will focus entirely on coding and problem-solving; the robots will be prebuilt, so no construction experience is required. Over the course, students will work through a structured series of programming projects that gradually increase in difficulty. We will begin with block-based programming to learn how to control motors, drive and turn the robot, and manipulate field elements using both driver-controlled and autonomous routines. From there, students will apply the core building blocks of programming — variables, conditionals, loops, functions, structured logic, and debugging — within increasingly challenging robot-based tasks. Students who are ready may transition from block programming to Python. Each student will work at their own pace. When a project is completed successfully, it is checked off and the student moves on to the next challenge. The curriculum is the same for all students; younger students may move more gradually, while older or faster-moving students may advance into more complex projects. Students are welcome to ask one another for help, but each student is responsible for completing their own work. Because students are programming real robots in a physical space, they will encounter practical engineering challenges that do not appear in screen-only coding. Movements must be precise, timing matters, and small programming errors have visible consequences. The goal of the course is not only to introduce coding, but to develop logical thinking, troubleshooting skills, and disciplined problem-solving in a hands-on environment. This course is designed for self-motivated students who enjoy problem solving and challenging themselves. Technology Requirement: Each student must bring a fully functional laptop (Windows or Mac) capable of running VEXcode IQ and connecting to a VEX IQ robot via USB. Parents are welcome to bring their laptops to me ahead of time to check compatibility. Chromebooks, iPads, and other tablets are not supported for this class. Students are responsible for ensuring their laptop is charged and operational before class. Devices that cannot reliably connect to the robot will prevent participation in programming activities. No prior programming or robotics experience is required.”
Required Textbooks and Materials:
Working Laptop that is compatible with Vex IQ Coding (not compatible with Chromebook, IPads, or other tablets)
Homework Estimate: No homework, but kids are free to program at home and get ahead if they wish.
Teacher Bio:

Tuition: 30 weeks (1-hour class) – $230
Materials Fee: $35
Optional Lab:
Class Description:
Calling all fair lovers! I am excited to work with your student to create fair entries that might win them a ribbon. My goal for this class is to give kids the opportunity to let their ideas be expressed through crafts/projects while taking on new creative challenges and learning new skills. A few of the projects I hope to do are decorating various household items, tie-dyeing, making greeting cards, scrapbooking, making holiday decorations, learning how to enter photography and picture mounting, clay sculptures, seed art, collages, plant/flower projects they will get started to be ready for the fall and more. This past year my kids each entered about 40 items in the fair and the excitement to run around and see all of their entries is one of their favorite parts. I want other kids to have that experience as well :). I will hold onto all the entries as they are completed. At the end of the year you will get them all at once. Hopefully this will allow everything to stay together and then come August you can register and enter them in the fair if that is your student’s desire. Lastly…disclaimer…if you do not live in Wilson county your student is not eligible to enter the fair but, of course, is more than welcome to still come craft and learn along with us.
Required Textbooks and Materials:
My goal with fair crafting is for students to learn that projects can be made from items laying around the house. For a few of the projects, I will give you a list of items you might have at home to then send with the student when needed (mason jar, picture frame, white shirt…). The acrylic paint markers, glue, flip flops, tote bags, canvas, bandanas, card stock, socks, etc. I will get with the materials fee.

2:30 PM – 3:30 PM Start Your Own Business Now!

Grades 5-8
Tuition: 30 weeks (1-hour class) – $230
Materials Fee: $10
Optional Lab:
Class Description:
Come learn how to start your own business. Don’t wait until you graduate! Do it now! In this class, students will start their own business and, in the process, learn about creating and understanding their vision and their mission for their businesses. They will learn about marketing, sales, advertising, customer relations, inventory, profits, services, employees, and managing their business. There’s no better way to learn than to dive in and start doing! These are all skills that they can grow up with and apply to their future businesses as adults if they choose entrepreneurship as their careers. Students will learn hands on and will have to learn to be creative to solve problems and overcome obstacles to start their own profitable businesses. We’ll learn to answer questions like: Why do businesses fail? Why do businesses succeed? Why would two similar business ideas have different outcomes / profit margins? Students will hear from local business people and young entrepreneurs (some of whom are CCA grads) who have successfully started their own businesses in the real world. This isn’t a class that the student can come and just listen or goof off in. All students will be accountable to the teachers and other students to dive in and get started. We will hit the ground running. Every student will be starting their first business before the end of the fall semester and show it off at the Christmas Makers Market in early December.
Required Textbooks and Materials:
Students will need access to a computer at home. A laptop would be helpful but is not required. Students will not all need to purchase the same materials, but they may need to make some investment in supplies, depending on their business.
Homework Estimate: Amount of homework will fluctuate throughout the year and will increase as their businesses get started. We will encourage the students to see it as a time investment in their business rather than homework. There will likely be times the success of their business is a reflection of the amount of time spent working and researching outside of class.
Teacher Bio:
“Mary Besse has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. She is the founder of CCA and directed it for 10 years. After handing over the directorship to Ms. Hilarie, she opened The Front Porch Cafe here in Lebanon. She still serves on the board of our tutorial. Before starting CCA, Ms. Mary also was a lead instructor at a local martial arts studio, she began and owned a photography business, and owned and operated a homemade meals to go business. Tim Lance has a desire for students to be prepared for a thriving adulthood. He and his wife Melissa began homeschooling 13 years ago. His family became part of the initial CCA class in 2014. Tim began serving as the Administrative Pastor of The Journey Church in 2018. Prior to his current role, he served over 30 years in operations/logistics with multiple retail establishments and non-profits. When Tim’s daughter was 11, he helped her establish a thriving baking business. Scott Marlow is a serial entrepreneur. He has created a series of marketing and software businesses online and is working on another one currently. On the rare occasion that Scott has a glimmer of a clue of what he’s doing, he builds a solo online business and usually experiences a modicum of success. When he doesn’t have a clue (which is most of the time) he puts his superpower to work, which is hiring really excellent people who are much smarter than him. Scott has found that this is the real secret to success in building a business. Scott has also recently begun a new real estate investing venture and enjoys encouraging young people to explore the possibilities of real estate investing for themselves. ”
