Teacher: Branden McGrath

8:00 AM – 9:00 AM Archery

Grades 5-6
Tuition: 30 weeks (1-hour class) – $230
Materials Fee: $25
Optional Lab:
Class Description:
Welcome to Archery Class. We will start from the beginning using the USA Archery National Training System. The goal of this class is not just to get kids to shoot a bow but to understand that Archery is about technique, form, and having fun. We will apply the steps of the NTS and learn about the equipment we shoot, the different styles of Archery, the scoring and targets of each, and mostly how to have fun in a sport we grow to love. They will do some target building, learn about bow mechanics, and ultimately leave this class knowing what Archery is truly about. Discipline, structure, and focus on Archery typically make a child a great life steward. To me, the real blessing is just that. Thank you for your interest in CCA archery class!
Required Textbooks and Materials:
Please contact Branden McGrath before buying* to ensure you are purchasing what is needed. In general, a Recurve or Genesis Compound Bow and arrows are needed for this class. The type can depend on your child’s size and what the bow will possibly be used for in the future. Additionally, an archery tab is needed to aid in shooting the bow (preferred is Bateman TC3 Three Finger Under Tab https://lancasterarchery.com/products/bateman-tc3-three-finger-under-tab ). http://www.lancasterarchery.com is a good source for finding the equipment needed. A soft or hard-shelled case for transporting and containing equipment at CCA is essential. Optional equipment needed: resistance exercise bands for physical therapy (Amazon/Walmart). **You may rent a bow from CCA for $75 for the year. Your child will not be able to take this bow home for practice. (An additional materials fee check will need to be written to CCA for $75 dated 5/1/25 at the time of registration if you are renting.)
Homework Estimate: None
Teacher Bio:
I have been married to my wife, Katreece, for 22 years as of June 28th. We have three children: Kaden (2025 CCA Graduate), Jalyn 11th grade, and Emmie 9th grade. We own our own construction business, McGrath Construction. I have always loved bow hunting, but didn’t get into archery competitions until my son, Kaden, was about 7 years old. Back then, archery clubs weren’t as common as they are now, so I had to learn everything on my own. Due to the scarce population of archery clubs in Middle TN, I decided to start my own club, TN Triple Threat, in 2019. I obtained my Coach’s certification and began offering private lessons to archers around the area. As a family, we travel around the country for various competitions. Our team, TN Triple Threat, has won numerous state titles and National titles. Bobby Smith was a good friend of mine, and I had known him for a long time. It is with a heavy heart that I try to fill some big shoes. I promised him I would take care of his students, and I intend to do just that. I’m looking forward to sharing this sport with your child alongside my son, Kaden.

8:00 AM – 9:00 AM Crafting for the Fair

Grades 5-6
Tuition: 30 weeks (1-hour class) – $230
Materials Fee: $35
Optional Lab:
Class Description:
Calling all fair lovers! I am excited to work with your student to create fair entries that might even one day win them a ribbon. My goal for this class is to allow kids to let their individual creative ideas be expressed through the crafts/projects while taking on new creative challenges and learning new skills. A few of the projects I hope to do are decorating various household items, tie-dyeing, making greeting cards, scrapbooking, making holiday decorations, learning how to enter photography and picture mounting, baking presentation practice, plant/flower projects they will get started to be ready for the fall and more. This past year my girls each entered about 30 items in the fair and the excitement to run around and see all the entries is one of their favorite parts. I want other kids to have that experience as well :). I will hold onto all the entries as they are completed. At the end of the year you will get them all at once. Hopefully this will allow everything to stay together and then come August you can register and enter them in the fair. Lastly…disclaimer…if you do not live in Wilson county your student is not eligible to enter the fair but, of course, is more than welcome to still come craft and learn along with us.
Required Textbooks and Materials:
Scissors. My goal with fair crafting is that some of the projects are made from items laying around the house. I will give you a list of items at the beginning of the semester for you to start looking around for and send with the student when needed (mason jar, 2-liter bottle, picture frame, white shirt…). The acrylic paint markers, glue, flip flops, tote bags, bandanas, card stock, socks, etc. I will get with the materials fee.
Homework Estimate: Less than one hour. I will give the students a heads up as to what we will be working on each week. This will allow them to discuss with family and maybe search for creative ideas on how they would like to approach their next project.
Teacher Bio:
David and I have three kids that we have always homeschooled and this will be our fifth year at CCA. I graduated with a Bachelors in Marketing but all my experience is in the non-profit and photography field. I love crafting so much that teaching it once a week to 90 kids was one of my favorite projects as a Peace Corps volunteer. Our family attends Fairview Church and we live in east Lebanon with a fluctuating number of chickens.

Teacher: Amanda Phillips

8:00 AM – 9:00 AM Drawing and Mixed Media

Grades 5-6
Tuition: 30 weeks (1-hour class) – $230
Materials Fee: $35
Optional Lab:
Class Description:
Instruction for the Drawing class is based on “Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain,” a technique that allows students to draw what they see instead of what they think they see. Our early drawing of a house might be a square with a triangle on top. While that drawing is a representation of a house, it is not what a house really looks like. This technique gives instruction on how to draw the intricate details that make a drawing look “real,” while also enabling the students to portray their projects with perspective and proportion. As the year progresses, they will learn shading techniques, which give depth and value to a drawing. Students will also be instructed on how to effectively use other mediums such as pen and ink and colored pencils. After a few basic drawings are completed, students will be allowed to choose from other materials supplied and will progress at their own speed. Students will be required to bring or email me a reference picture that they are interested in drawing each week.
Required Textbooks and Materials:
I will provide all materials
Homework Estimate: None

Materials Fee: $15
Optional Lab:
Class Description:
“In this class, we are going to make English/Language Arts class as fun as we can. Each week, students will need to print their Daily Checklist. The checklist has tons of helpful information for students and parents. Each week I will use class time to go over the topics for the week. Students will work on assignments from their workbooks throughout the week, referring to their checklist. Students will have a monthly spelling/vocabulary quiz in class to gauge understanding. During this time, students will turn in their workbooks for me to look over and give feedback. We will also work on the building blocks to writing an essay and the mechanics of what it takes. This will look different for each student, and each student will be graded based on their own progress. Throughout the year, we will read at least 4 novels. I have not decided which ones we will read, but will notify parents as soon as I make this decision. Previous students: There will be new curriculum and novel choices, which will allow previous students to take this class again if they took it in 5th grade.”

2:30 PM – 3:30 PM Start Your Own Business Now!

Grades 5-8
Tuition: 30 weeks (1-hour class) – $230
Materials Fee: $0
Optional Lab:
Class Description:
Come learn how to start your own business. Don’t wait until you graduate! Do it now! In this class, students will start their own business and, in the process, learn about creating and understanding their vision and their mission for their businesses. They will learn about marketing, sales, advertising, customer relations, inventory, profits, services, employees, and managing their business. There’s no better way to learn than to dive in and start doing! These are all skills that they can grow up with and apply to their future businesses as adults if they choose entrepreneurship as their careers. Students will learn hands on and will have to learn to be creative to solve problems and overcome obstacles to start their own profitable businesses. We’ll learn to answer questions like: Why do businesses fail? Why do businesses succeed? Why would two similar business ideas have different outcomes / profit margins? Students will hear from local business people and young entrepreneurs (some of whom are CCA grads) who have successfully started their own businesses in the real world. This isn’t a class that the student can come and just listen or goof off in. All students will be accountable to the teachers and other students to dive in and get started.
Required Textbooks and Materials:
Students will need access to a computer at home. A laptop would be helpful but is not required. Students will not all need to purchase the same materials, but they may need to make some investment in supplies, depending on their business.
Homework Estimate: Amount of homework will fluctuate throughout the year and will increase as their businesses get started. We will encourage the students to see it as a time investment in their business rather than homework. There will likely be times the success of their business is a reflection of the amount of time spent working and researching outside of class.
Teacher Bio:
Mary Besse has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. She is the founder of CCA and directed it for 10 years. After handing over the directorship to Ms. Hilarie, she opened The Front Porch Cafe here in Lebanon. She still serves on the board of our tutorial. Before starting CCA, Ms. Mary also was a lead instructor at a local martial arts studio, she began and owned a photography business, and owned and operated a homemade meals to go business. Tim Lance has a desire for students to be prepared for a thriving adulthood. He and his wife Melissa began homeschooling 12 years ago. His family became part of the initial CCA class in 2014. Tim began serving as the Administrative Pastor of The Journey Church in 2018. Prior to his current role, he served over 30 years in operations/logistics with multiple retail establishments and non-profits. When Tim’s daughter was 11, he helped her establish a thriving baking business. Scott Marlow is a serial entrepreneur. He has created a series of marketing and software businesses online and is working on another one currently. On the rare occasion that Scott has a glimmer of a clue of what he’s doing, he builds a solo online business and usually experiences a modicum of success. When he doesn’t have a clue (which is most of the time) he puts his superpower to work, which is hiring really excellent people who are much smarter than him. Scott has found that this is the real secret to success in building a business. Scott has also recently begun a new real estate investing venture and enjoys encouraging young people to explore the possibilities of real estate investing for themselves.
