Class Description: We will be traveling through our wonderful country learning state capitals, state animals, state birds, famous landmarks, and much more, even history! We will study our states by our 5 regions, starting with the Northeast. This is a two-year course. There is so much information that we absolutely can’t cover all 50 states in one year. We will study 25 states this year and 25 next year. I am looking forward to teaching your student this year!

Class Description: This is a ceative, crafty, and fun course! We will begin with sewing a pin cushion, a cute cinch bag, and moving on to designing and sewing our own zipper pouches. We will then move on to making our zoo! The zoo will consist of pom pom creatures and animal plushies. We will end the year with a wild embroidery project. It will be SEW much fun!

Teacher Bio: It has been a dream of mine ever since I was a little girl to teach. I was taught sewing by my mother, grandmas, and my aunt who is a seamstress. I then went to college for child care and learned how to be creative, engaging, and interactive. After the Lord gave us our children, I knew I was being called to homeschool. I have homeschooled our 4 children for the last 10 years. We have been involved with a few homeschool groups where I have taught. It has been a blessing to encourage and teach these children with creativity, love, and patience. We have been part of CCA for the last 2 years, and I plan to graduate all of our children here.


Sign Language

Class Description: Let your hands do the talking! Throughout these 24 weeks we will be learning many things in Sign Language class. We will learn what sign language is, why some people use it, and what a sign language interpreter is. The first thing is to start with the building blocks: the alphabet and numbers. Through the weeks, more words will be added, including people, animals, food/drink, things you find around the house, colors, sports/activities, and many more. We will learn to form sentences and have a small conversation. Also, what better way to learn sign language than through music? We will sign the ABC song; 1, 2 Buckle My Shoe; The Itsy Bitsy Spider; and more.
The only “homework” will be practicing what we learned in class and a few fun activities to do at home.
We will have small “quizzes” periodically containing 20 questions/signs. I usually bring treats, such as Starbursts or Tootsie Rolls for the quiz. They will receive one treat for every four they get correct.
We will also perform a song at the end of the year.

Teacher Bio: My name is Susan Meyer. My husband, Doug, and I have been married for 18 years and have 5 children together (Gavin – 21, Jacob – 18, Lucas – 15, Sammy – 12, and Breanna – 9). Teacher Bio: Mike Hudson is a National Level Coach trained by an Olympic coach. He has been involved with archery for over 25 years. He has pioneered archery programs with the YMCA, taught sight-impaired people to shoot at the Tennessee School for the Blind, and worked with many groups of all ages in the Nashville area.


Drama Grades 1-4

Class Description: In this class we learn some of the different techniques used in drama and participate in activities to enhance some of what we have learned. Teacher Bio: This is my 4th year teaching at CCA. When I’m not teaching, I am working full time at the Capitol Theatre in Lebanon. I try to involve myself in 1 production a year. In the past I have been in Music Man, Christmas Carol, Annie, and more. I graduated from Heritage Christian Academy in 2008 (where I was voted most dramatic 🙂 ), and I got my Associates Degree in Mass Communications from Volunteer State Community College in 2019.

Teacher Bio: My name is Tracy Dowell. I am new to the homeschooling community. I have 11 years experience in teaching and love teaching. However, I decided to leave the public aspect of teaching to pursue other opportunities. I am currently a Sunday School teacher. I teach 4th grade girls and boys and enjoy every aspect of that class. As a teacher, I have the commitment and passion to teach children to become leaders. Class Description: Students will experience the language and engaging culture of Latin America through music, movement, games, and crafts. The language goal of this class will be to introduce the sounds of a new language and accustom their ears to hearing it in an immersion environment. Students will practice basic conversation through introductions and greetings. Music, songs, and games will be used extensively to assist in long-term assimilation of vocabulary, including colors, numbers, basic actions, family members, and food items. The cultural goal of this class will focus on introducing students to the music, customs, foods (even sampling a few), and holidays of Latin America.

Teacher Bio: My name is Taleen Lambert. We have been homeschooling since 2018, and this will be our second year at CCA. I received a bachelors in Special Education from Harding University and have taught a wide range of subjects and age levels over the past 15 years. I have a deep love for the culture and language of Latin America since I was born and grew up in Guatemala as the daughter to missionary parents, and I have also had the privilege of traveling extensively throughout South and Central America.

Class Description: Over the last 3 years, we have journeyed through the Jesus Storybook Bible curriculum. All that God has spoken to us finds its ultimate fulfillment in the person of Jesus. This next year, as we journey from the OT to the NT portions of our Bible, we will discover this truth and find together how it applies to our life.

Class Description: Students will be encouraged to be creative writers and have fun expressing themselves through writing. Students will be encouraged to work with partners and within the group to take prompts, adventures, scenarios, and stories to another level.
Along the way, students will learn the basic steps of the writing process: pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing, as well as how to use graphic organizers and outlines to organize their thoughts during the writing process. Students will learn the basic structure of sentences and paragraphs. Student will learn to “revise” their own writing by correcting spelling and punctuation and by adding descriptive words, details, and dialogue to make their writing pieces strong and interesting. Students will also explore the different types of writing: informative, persuasive, narrative, and descriptive.
Students will work at their own pace on each writing project. My goal is that every student becomes a better writer, but most importantly that students view writing in a positive light.

Teacher Bio: My name is Misty Hunter, and I am a homeschool mom of two. My daughters, ages 7 and 9, and I love to homeschool. This is our third year as part of the CCA family, and we absolutely love everything about CCA.
I graduated from TTU with a Bachelors in Elementary Education and a Masters in Leadership. I taught in the public school system for LSSD and Wilson County Schools for 12 years prior to homeschooling. I taught grades 1, 3, 4 and 5. I love teaching my classes in fun, hands-on ways, and I use a variety of learning strategies to reach every student. I’m excited to be teaching at CCA again this upcoming school year.


Learning Through Literature

Class Description: A year of learning to love literature by diving into classic, time-honored books. Children will read in and out of class and complete activities and literature packets that will help them gain a better understanding of literary concepts, work on comprehension skills, and increase vocabulary. Hands-on fun and projects will be included. Please note that the book selection changes yearly so the class can be taken in both 3rd and 4th grade.
Required Textbooks and Materials: Each student will need his/her own copy of each title we use in class and a 1-inch binder to store class handouts in.
Homework Estimate: At-home reading of 20 minutes per day. Students can read the material or it can be read aloud to them. Some in class work may be finished at home, and there are fun end-of-book projects that will be done at home.

Class Description: We will learn about 8 different Native American tribes from the Arctic to the southeastern United States. We will learn about heritage, customs, and values as well as types of shelters, kinds of foods they ate, and the natural resources available to them. We will also follow the journeys of 10 famous adventurers. We will look at historical background facts and maps while creating a timeline and a variety of craft projects.

Class Description: Students will learn how to play their instrument, the correct practice techniques, how to take care of their instrument, and how to perform individually as well as with a group. They will work on note and rhythm reading, beginning sight reading, and beginning scale studies. Students will need to practice 90 minutes weekly. Prizes will be given to those who practice 120 minutes weekly and fill out their practice sheet. Performances in December and April/May.

Teacher Bio: My name is Jennifer Owens. I have been performing in concert bands since I was in 4th grade. I’ve taught high school and elementary/middle school concert band, high school marching band, high school jazz band, as well as percussion ensembles, brass ensembles, and woodwind ensembles. I’ve also taught private music lessons since 1994. I went to Hofstra University in Long Island, NY, where I grew up, and received a Bachelor’s of Music Education Degree. I performed with many groups while in college. My degrees now include a Bachelor’s of Music Education and a Master’s of Special Education. I currently perform with the Music City Dixieland Band and the Nashville Community Concert Band. I am the director of Labarum Cottage School. Class Description: I will be using Family Time Fitness’s Physical Education Core 1 for ages 5-10 to plan many of our classes this year. We will use physically active games, fun activities and exercises to work towards improving on various skills:
-locomotor skills like running, hopping, skipping, and crawling
-body management skills like balance and weight transfer
-manipulative work like throwing, catching, dribbling, and passing
-rhythm skills like jump roping and hula hoop
-cooperative skills like working in pairs and small groups (one example is parachute play)
-fitness skills like strength training, cardiovascular fitness, and flexibility/stretching
-special awareness, like personal space and boundaries

Teacher Bio: My family has been homeschooling for eight years. My husband Chris and I live in Lebanon, with our three kids: Emma, Walker, and Olivia, plus our cocker spaniel, Milo. We have been at CCA for 3 years. We worship with the Maple Hill Church of Christ, where I have served the last few years as the Children’s Ministry Coordinator. In January of 2019, I began working with a non-profit missionary organization, Great Cities Missions, where I serve as the Latin Team’s Women’s Consultant. My husband, Robert, and I have been married thirty years, and we have four children. This is our family’s twenty-first year homeschooling. Our oldest, Emily is a Physician’s Assistant, Elora is in PT school at UTC, Eliza is senior majoring in nursing at Lee University, and Ezra is a senior and attends CCA. I love Jesus, my family, animals, working out, chocolate, coffee, the beach, the mountains, and living in this exceptional country! Looking forward to a wonderful school year at CCA!
