American Sign Language

8:00 am – 9:00 am
Teacher: Susan Meyer
Tuition: 24 weeks (1-hour class) – $168
Materials Fee: $ $0
Optional Lab:
Class Description:
“Let your hands do the talking! Throughout these 24 weeks we will be learning many things in Sign Language class. We will learn what sign language is, why some people use it, and what a sign language interpreter is. The first thing is to start with the building blocks….the alphabet and numbers. Through the weeks more words will be added, including people, animals, food/drink, things you find around the house, colors, and many more. We will learn to form sentences/questions and have a small conversation using the signs we have learned. Also, a great way to learn signs is through music….we will learn to sign the ABC song, 1-2 Buckle My Shoe, The Itsy Bitsy Spider, The Pledge of Allegiance, and more. We may have small “quizzes” periodically containing about 20 signs. I usually bring prepackaged treats, such as Starbursts or Tootsie Rolls for the quiz….since we do not receive grades in my class. They will receive 1 treat for every 4 correct answers. Please let me know if there are any allergies, or if you prefer a different treat.”
Required Textbooks and Materials:
There is no required text for this class. However, a great book to have to help practice signs is The Joy of Signing: A Dictionary of American Signs, Third Edition by Lottie L. Riekehof, PHD.
