Famous Americans

Class Description: Students will take a journey through time and learn how ordinary Americans took part in changing the world we live in. We will learn that anyone, even ordinary people like us, can make a difference in our world. We will learn about character traits that make for a good leader.
Students will be introduced to famous American presidents, leaders, inventors, explorers, singers, sports heroes and more through the use of literature, technology, hands-on activities, and maybe even some “visits” from these heroes. (This class will alternate lists from last year, so it will not be a repeat of the last school year’s studies.)

Teacher Bio: My name is Misty Hunter, and I am a homeschool mom of two. My daughters are 7 and 9, and we love homeschooling. This is our third year as part of the CCA family, and we absolutely love everything about CCA. I taught Elementary Education for LSSD and Wilson County Schools for 12 years prior to homeschooling. I taught grades 1, 3, 4, and 5. I have a Bachelors in Elementary Education and a Masters in Leadership. Sign Language

Class Description: Let your hands do the talking! Throughout these 24 weeks we will be learning many things in Sign Language class. We will learn what sign language is, why some people use it, and what a sign language interpreter is. The first thing is to start with the building blocks: the alphabet and numbers. Through the weeks, more words will be added, including people, animals, food/drink, things you find around the house, colors, sports/activities, and many more. We will learn to form sentences and have a small conversation. Also, what better way to learn sign language than through music? We will sign the ABC song; 1, 2 Buckle My Shoe; The Itsy Bitsy Spider; and more.
The only “homework” will be practicing what we learned in class and a few fun activities to do at home.
We will have small “quizzes” periodically containing 20 questions/signs. I usually bring treats, such as Starbursts or Tootsie Rolls for the quiz. They will receive one treat for every four they get correct.
We will also perform a song at the end of the year.

Teacher Bio: My name is Susan Meyer. My husband, Doug, and I have been married for 18 years and have 5 children together (Gavin – 21, Jacob – 18, Lucas – 15, Sammy – 12, and Breanna – 9). We are in our 9th year of homeschooling. This will be my fifth year teaching sign language in a tutorial/co-op setting and my third year at CCA. I am looking forward to an amazing year!

Teacher Bio: My name is Brittany Root, and this will be my first year to teach at CCA! It will also be my first year homeschooling my children. I’m excited to begin! Drama Grades 1-4

Class Description: In this class we learn some of the different techniques used in drama. We participate in activities to enhance some of what we have learned. The student learns audition skills, stage direction, and the importance of getting to know your character. Every student is involved in a winter and spring stage production to take what they have learned and put it into action.

Teacher Bio: This is my 4th year teaching at CCA. When I’m not teaching, I am working full time at the Capitol Theatre in Lebanon. I try to involve myself in 1 production a year. In the past I have been in Music Man, Christmas Carol, Annie, and more. I graduated from Heritage Christian Academy in 2008 (where I was voted most dramatic 🙂 ) and I got my Associates Degree in Mass Communications from Volunteer State Community College in 2019.


Spelling Games

Class Description: This class will incorporate partner and group spelling games as a fun way to learn sight words, beginning words, and commonly used words for grades 1 and 2. Students will gain the basic understanding of how words are formed to reinforce good spelling habits by working on word patterns and spelling rules. The use of physical movement, hands-on activities, songs, as well as lots and lots of spelling games will give students the practice they need to learn and memorize important phonics skills and spelling words for this grade level.

Homework Estimate: After being introduced to a set of words, an optional word list will be sent home for students to continue to practice throughout the week, if parents choose to do so. This is optional.

Class Description: We will be traveling through our wonderful country learning state capitals, state animals, state birds, famous landmarks, and much more, even history! We will study our states by our 5 regions, starting with the Northeast. This is a two-year course. There is so much information that we absolutely can’t cover all 50 states in one year. We will study 25 states this year and 25 next year. I am looking forward to teaching your student this year!

Class Description: Over the last 3 years, we have journeyed through the Jesus Storybook Bible curriculum. We will be continuing that journey this next year, moving from the OT into the NT from first semester to second semester. Our class will focus on Jesus being the fulfillment of the Scriptures. All that God has spoken to us finds its ultimate fulfillment in the person of Jesus. This next year, as we journey from the OT to the NT portions of our Bible, we will discover this truth and find together how it applies to our life.

Class Description: Students will experience the language and engaging culture of Latin America through music, movement, games, and crafts. The language goal of this class will be to introduce the sounds of a new language and accustom their ears to hearing it in an immersion environment. Students will practice basic conversation through introductions and greetings. Music, songs, and games will be used extensively to assist in long-term assimilation of vocabulary, including the following topics: colors, numbers, basic actions, family members, and food items. The cultural goal of this class will focus on introducing students to the music, customs, foods (even sampling a few), and holidays of Latin America.

Teacher Bio: My name is Taleen Lambert. We have been homeschooling since 2018, and this will be our second year at CCA. I received a bachelors in Special Education from Harding University and have taught a wide range of subjects and age levels over the past 15 years. I have a deep love for the culture and language of Latin America since I was born and grew up in Guatemala as the daughter to missionary parents, and I have also had the privilege of traveling extensively throughout South and Central America.

Teacher Bio: This is my 3rd year teaching for CCA. I have 30 years of martial arts teaching and training and have obtained a 6th degree black belt. My specialty is building children up through positive reinforcement. I am originally from Memphis, TN, and moved to Lebanon in 2008, where we opened our studio.

Writer’s Workshop

Class Description: Writer’s Workshop is an organized framework of teaching writing to young writers. Students will learn the basics of writing.
1.) Classes will begin with teacher-led mini lessons introducing basic grammar practice, basic sentence structure, types of punctuation, and other skills to help students begin the writing process.
2.) Students will practice daily writing exercises that will begin with good sentences and learning how to make those sentences even better with adjectives and adverbs. At their own individual progress, students will move on to learn important essentials of writing such as pre-writing with story webs, developing a title, forming a paragraph/paragraphs, and creating a corresponding illustration to support each piece.
3.) Students will be encouraged to share their writing pieces in class.
My goal is to use different prompts, songs, scenarios, and different types of literature to encourage writers to love writing and love sharing ideas on paper.

Class Description: This art class combines teaching about famous artists and works associated with them with hands-on art projects to support this learning. We will work with various mediums, including watercolors, acrylics, oil pastels, markers, chalk, and clay. Each student will earn techniques to help them in their artistic endeavors. We will encourage discipline, creativity, and imagination, which are essential parts of learning and appreciating art.

Learning Games

Class Description: This class will use a variety of group and partner games to teach, review, and drill topics across the curriculum. We will work on grade level skills such as math, spelling, phonics, language, problem solving, etc. Along with the use of games, we will use movement, centers, role play, exercises, technology, and more, while learning to take turns, play fair, and work together. My goal is to support your teaching at home through games, games, and more games.

Class Description: I will be using Family Time Fitness’s Physical Education Core 1 for ages 5-10 to plan many of our classes this year. We will use physically active games, fun activities and exercises to work towards improving on various skills:
-locomotor skills like running, hopping, skipping, and crawling
-body management skills like balance and weight transfer
-manipulative work like throwing, catching, dribbling, and passing
-rhythm skills like jump roping and hula hoop
-cooperative skills like working in pairs and small groups (one example is parachute play)
-fitness skills like strength training, cardiovascular fitness, and flexibility/stretching
-special awareness, like personal space and boundaries
PE class will be held outside if possible. Otherwise, we will hold class inside in the gymnasium.

Teacher Bio: My family has been homeschooling for eight years. My husband Chris and I live in Lebanon, with our three kids: Emma, Walker, and Olivia, plus our cocker spaniel, Milo. We have been at CCA for 3 years. We worship with the Maple Hill Church of Christ, where I have served the last few years as the Children’s Ministry Coordinator. In January of 2019, I began working with a non-profit missionary organization, Great Cities Missions, where I serve as the Latin Team’s Women’s Consultant. We previously spent almost 8 years in Asuncion, Paraguay, working on a team planting a church.

Class Description: This class will be filled with hands-on activities, games, food, and fun! We will learn about ancient civilizations such as the Romans, Egyptians, Greeks, and Babylonians to name a few. Students will learn about key figures in history like Julius Caesar, Hannibal, Cleopatra, and King Nebuchadnezzar. Some of our class projects will be making an ancient Roman road, obelisk, cuneiform writing, and tie-dyeing shirts. Students will also be able to sample foods from these ancient civilizations.

Teacher Bio: My family and I have been involved in the homeschool community for the past 12 years. My son recently graduated from CCA and my daughter will be entering the 5th grade. This will be my third year teaching at CCA. I love a good history documentary and watching old movies.


Zoology

Class Description: Students will have fun in this class as they learn all about the animal kingdom! How do animals live together? What do they eat? How do they act with one another? What is a zoologist? What does a zookeeper do? There are so many fun and fascinating questions that they will learn about in this class. Students will have many hands-on activities to help them understand all about zoology! Did you know many musical instruments can make animal sounds? They will learn how to make these sounds in class! Let’s learn all about zoology!

Teacher Bio: My name is Jennifer Owens. I went to Hofstra University in Long Island, NY, where I grew up, and received a Bachelor’s of Music Education Degree. I also have a Master’s of Special Education. I have been teaching since 1994. My daughter is now in 7th grade and we have been homeschooling since Kindergarten. I am the director of Labarum Cottage School. I love teaching children and helping instill the love of education in children. Science, music, and math are subjects that I love teaching where I can use many hands-on activities to engage the students in learning.
